Planting 1,400 Trees with Pana Organic
Last weekend, members of the Pana Organic Pedla Race Team, Pedla staff and Pana Organic staff headed down to Boonwurrung Country/Mornington Peninsula along with Pana Organic to plant trees with Mornington Peninsula Koala Conservation (MPKC).
The situation for Koalas on the Mornington Peninsula is dire. Native vegetation covers only 18% of the land, with 69% of Koala habitat existing on private property. As a result, Koala habitat is extremely fragmented and deforestation has had a massive impact on the Koala population.
We joined the team at Pana Organic for a day of tree planting on private land near Hastings, planting twenty different varieties of natives that would have been found in the area before the arrival of Europeans.
Mornington Peninsula Koala Conservation (MPKC) is a group established in 2019 as a grassroots organisation, made up of members of the Mornington community who could see the importance of preserving the local Koala population from further land development.
Their strategy is to create land ‘corridors’ that Koalas can use to remove themselves from developed areas and the increased threats they face in those areas.
Over the course of the morning, we planted 1,400 trees on private land that will contribute to the local Koala population, as well as increasing native coverage and contributing to the local biodiversity.
On top of this direct and local impact, we have partnered with Ecologi to plant a tree for every order you make with us. To date, we have panted over 7,000 trees since starting the initiative!
